DISCOVER PORTOGRUARO

AN UNMISSABLE EXCURSION TWO STEPS FROM CAORLE
Portogruaro, lying along the Lémene river, about halfway between Venice and Trieste. The birth certificate of the city does not exist, even if the first known document dates back to 10 January 1140, when the bishop of Concordia, Gervino, stipulated a contract with some merchants, granting them land in order to build a port and build houses and warehouses. Until 1420 Portogruaro, endowed with its own political and administrative autonomy (council, podestà, statutes) was part of the patriarchate of Aquileia. From 1420, having entered the orbit of the Republic of Venice, Portogruaro experienced its moment of greatest splendor. The city expands and embellishes itself: the medieval access gates are renovated, stone bridges are built, the merchant bourgeoisie flaunts their well-being by erecting magnificent buildings in the Gothic-Renaissance style, often frescoed with mythological subjects. After the fall of Venice in 1797, and the subsequent fall of the Napoleonic star, the city remained subject to Austria until 1866, when it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. Today the city, keeping faith with its illustrious past, is a school of the first magnitude, and is trying to enhance its strengths: the culture, the strategic position of gateway to Central Eastern Europe, the vocation commercial.
The Municipal Palace of Portogruaro is a Gothic-style building dating back to 1265
